Wake Up Early
One of the best tips you can get as a photographer (a tip we repeated over and over again) is that, the best kind of light is natural light. If you are chasing after the golden hours, prepare to wake up early. The “golden hour” is around an hour after sunrise and an hour after sunset.
Do Your Homework
Cover your bases before the actual photoshoot. Learn as much as you can again about the places you travel to capture the best images.
Hone Your Skills
Rather than spending a scandalous amount of cash on new lenses, new camera or new tripod, focus on honing your skills. Because all these tools will be useless if you don’t!
Where To Stay
Lodging is one of the most important part of any travel. Make sure you stay in a place where there are a lot of photo opportunities.
Greeting The Locals Properly
It helps to find the best places to shoot if you learn how to greet the locals properly, in their native tongue. Something as simple as learning how to say “Hello” in their local language helps!
Fresh Ideas
Look for other places to get inspired. Browse through other photographers’ work, acknowledge their artworks, find great books or listen to classical music to allow the creative juices to flow.
Embrace The Culture
Photography isn’t just a visual kind of art, it’s also all about getting a feel of the place and finding inspiration. Don’t be afraid to try the local food, hear local music and generally embrace the culture to understand its story and capture the place in all its glory.
Get To Know The Locals
The best people to ask where the best place to shoot is the locals. It’s their country after all.
Pack Light
While it’s nice to have options, don’t bring your entire house with you. Travel light and bring only the essentials. Your back will thank you later.
Off The Beaten Path
Yes Hong Kong has its giant Buddha and Venice has its canals, but don’t settle for clichés, find new places to share, a fresh perspective on places people are familiar with.
Take Your Time
Traveling, especially for short periods at a time, means you want to maximize your stay as much as you can. However, to gain better understanding of each place you visit, you need to take your time and take in the place. Don’t be in such a hurry. Slow things down and your photos will turn out better.
Maximize Interaction
Travelling is fun when you get to interact with the locals. Why not travel slow, preferring trains or buses over flying, just to get to know the people more?
It’s Not JUST About Taking Pictures
Stop spending the whole trip looking through the lens, enjoy your travel by loosening up once in a while! Enjoy it while it lasts!
Going For Au Naturel
Natural light is awesome, don’t mess it up by abusing the flash! Learn the benefits of using natural light before you spend hundreds of dollars on reflectors or flash.
Go Higher
Find a great vantage point that overlooks the city to give viewers a bird’s eye view of the place! That’s the shot that will culminate all the beauty of the place.
